STOPNOW...STOP TRAFFICKING OF PEOPLE

Actions of STOPNOW

GALATSI GROUP

In April 2002, STOPNOW took the initiative of coordinating various agencies working to combat human trafficking. These included non-governmental organizations (NGOs), international organizations (IOs) and governmental bodies. The outcome of this initiative was the creation of a non-official joint effort that has since become known as the Galatsi Group.
The Galatsi Group meets on a monthly basis:

•To discuss the most recent developments in counter-trafficking
•To establish appropriate action plans
•To exchange feedback on the activities of each agency

In 2001 and in 2002 the Group focused on three actions:
Lobbying for the voting of an anti-trafficking bill, which subsequently passed through Parliament on 15 October 2002, as Law 3064/2002 and for the enactment and implementation of the relative Presidential Decree. The Decree will regulate issues such as the establishment of shelters and victim services, vocational training and placement, voluntary repatriation procedures and the reintegration of victims into society.

Shelters and psychological and medical services for trafficking victims.

Establishment of information networks.
In 2003 the primary goal of the Galatsi Group will be the establishment of shelters and psychological services for trafficking victims.
